Manitobans named to Team Canada for Nations Cup women’s hockey tournament

WINNIPEG — Four Manitobans will represent the maple leaf next month when Canada tries for an 11th Nations Cup title.

Winnipeg forward Jenelle Kohanchuk and Mallard defenceman Brigette Lacquette are among the 22 players named to the Canadian women’s development team roster for the four-day international tournament. Winnipegger Dwayne Gylywoychuk will lead the country from behind the bench alongside Pilot Mound’s Delaney Collins who will serve as an assistant coach.

“We’re looking forward to getting our team together on the ice overseas as we aim to defend our gold medal,” Gylywoychuk said in a statement. “These players have been working incredibly hard to prepare for this event and we believe we’ve selected a tremendous group to represent Canada.”

Kohancuk won gold medals at the Nations Cup in 2010 and and 2011. She also helped Canada capture the 4 Nations Cup title in 2014. Lacquette was part of Canada’s gold medal winning team at the 2010 IIHF Under-18 Women’s World Hockey Championship. She also won silver medals at the 2015 IIHF Women’s World Championship and 2015 4 Nations Cup. Lacquette and Kohanchuk both currently play in the Canadian Women’s Hockey League.

The Nations Cup, formely known as the Air Canada Cup, MLP Cup and Meco Cup, runs from January 4 to 7, 2016 in Füssen, Germany. Canada will compete against five other countries: Finland, Germany, Russia, Sweden and Switzerland. The Canadians have won gold in ten of the eleven years they’ve participated in the tournament.
