Vader charged with murder of missing Alberta couple

EDMONTON – Travis Vader has been charged with first-degree murder in the deaths of Lyle and Marie McCann, a St. Albert, Alberta couple who was last seen alive on July 3, 2010.

Their burnt-out motorhome was found two days later near a campground at Minnow Lake, 150 kilometres west of Edmonton. Their bodies have never been found.

Vader, 40, has been held at the Edmonton Remand Centre on unrelated charges. He was arrested there over the weekend in the deaths of the McCanns.

The McCann family is expected to speak to reporters at 3 p.m. MT today. The RCMP have said they will not provide further comment.

“Understandably, the public has many questions about what happened to the McCanns,” said Staff Sgt. Shawn LeMay in a release. “Those questions will be answered in court.”

Lyle McCann, 78, and his wife Marie, 77, were seen in video surveillance footage getting gas at the St. Albert Superstore on their way to meet their daughter in Abbotsford, B.C. on July 3, 2010.

A motorhome was found burning near Minnow Lake on July 5, 2010, but the McCanns were not reported missing until July 10, 2010 when they failed to arrive in B.C. as planned.

Vader was identified as a “person of interest” in the case soon after, and was arrested on unrelated warrants on July 19, 2010. His status was upgraded to “suspect” on Aug. 31, 2010, and he has been in custody ever since.
