Quebec daycare association cuts talks with family minstry

MONTREAL – The association that represents daycare services in the province said it is withdrawing from talks with the Ministry of the Family on financing.

This comes after reports revealed that the government is looking at cutting $120 million in daycare subsidies.

The government said it is trying to ensure the best possible management of its resources and it can’t understand why some daycares have surpluses and others have deficits.

Family Minister Francine Charbonneau told reporters in Quebec City that no official decision has been made on the cuts.

“There are no reports about layoffs. There is a report that says we are sitting with the partners to talk about the finances,” she said.

“That’s what we’re doing. We are at the seventh meeting that we have to talk about how we do things and can we do better…We have to think about this because it’s the money of every Quebecer.”

The government is already planning on cutting $74 million from daycare budgets this year.
