MONTREAL – Drivers got a surprise at the pumps Thursday morning as gas prices jumped overnight.
The hikes come after a report revealed that Quebecers pay the highest gas taxes in North America.

Drivers pay five separate taxes, including a carbon tax that only Quebec and California have agreed to pay.
For every dollar spent at the pump, 43 cents go to taxes.
According to CAA Quebec, it’s the provincial tax that hurts the most.
“It depends on every region, but here in Montreal, it’s about 19 cents per litre that we have to pay in provincial taxes,” said CAA-Quebec spokesperson Anne-Sophie Hamel.
The least taxed spot in North America?
That would be Alaska.
