Police rap battle about winter driving takes off on social media

EDMONTON – It all started with a tweet from Kindersley RCMP on Tuesday – a winter driving message that took the form of an epic, 1990 rap jam.

The RCMP’s poem appears to be a parody of American rapper Vanilla Ice’s lyrics for the hip hop song “Ice Ice Baby.”

Since that post, other detachments have joined in on the fun; posting lyrics of their own.

Edmonton police decided to use Will Smith as their safe driving song inspiration.

Their rhyme is a spin on the Fresh Prince of Bel Air theme song.

Now, this is a story all about how
My car got flipped-turned upside down
And I’d like to take a minute
Just sit right there
I’ll tell you how my car spun out of control in mid-air.

On the streets of Edmonton I wasn’t phased
Summer driving was easy most of the days
But then outta nowhere things got cool
All the water froze up in my grampa’s pool.

Then the storm filled the skies, yeah it was no good
Started making ice patches in my neighborhood
I locked up the brakes and my mom got scared
My car hit the ditch, ‘cause I wasn’t prepared.

I whistled a tow truck and when he came by
He suggested “winter tires, and take more time.”
If anything I could say I drive more safe now
I realized that my bumper ain’t no snow plow.
He dropped me back home, about 7 or 8
And I yelled to the trucker ‘Yo home smell ya later’
I looked at my wheels
Not to be taken lightly
Driving’s a privilege and I gotta do it politely.

– We’d like to thank the Kindersley RCMP for the inspiration.

The Calgary police also joined in, sharing a version of Sir Mix-A-Lot’s well-known tune.

The Regina Police Service chose a more modern tune for their rap, using Bruno Mars’ “Uptown Funk.”

This weather
That ice cold
Chief Hagen
That white gold
This city got slipp’ry streets
And speedy drivers
Crashin’ cars to pieces
Slippin’, Slidin’
MVAs up in the city
Got snow tires and sandbags
Gotta protect yourself & drive pretty!

We want hot (summer)
The po-lice hate November
We want hot (summer)
Got 6 mo’ months of cold winter
We want hot (summer)
Call 9-1-1 you know who we are
We want hot (summer)
And we’ll get there real quick
Break it down

Cars go weeohhweeohh (whuoo)
Cars go weeohhweeohh (whuoo)
Cars go weeohhweeohh (whuoo)
‘Cause RPS gonna help you out
‘Cause RPS gonna help you out
‘Cause RPS gonna help you out
Saturday night and we on the town
Don’t believe us just watch (come on)

Great job Kindersley RCMP and Edmonton Police Service on your takes!

Not wanting to be left out, the Millet Fire Department submitted their tune, another Sir Mix-A-Lot mix.

Kindersley RCMP, Edmonton Police Service our members come from the same generation. Meet officer mix a lot.

I like big trucks and I can not lie
You highway drivers can’t deny
That when you only leave an itty bitty space
Things could blow up in your face
You could get stung, with a ticket,
Or if what’s ahead slows you could hit it
if ice on the road is glaring
you’ll probably end up swearing
oh, baby, gotta keep your distance,
in winter road conditions
MFD is trying to warn you,
Cause If you can’t stop you’ll be so sorry
Oooh, another dump of snow hit
But you Gotta get in your ‘Benz?
Well excuse me, don’t cruise me,
‘cause tailgaiting don’t amuse me
I see you advancing,
In my mirrors I keep glancing,
There’s someplace you gotta get
Got it goin’ like a turbo ‘Vette
You’d really make a scene, If you had to stop suddenly
Even on a good day, do the math
Stay at least three seconds back
So, ladies (yeah), Fellas, (yeah)
Do your tires have what it takes?
When you brake it, brake it,
Brake it safely but……
You gotta keep back.
You gotta keep back.

Finally, Wednesday afternoon, an encore for the Kindersley RCMP, who decided to venture to a slightly different genre. Their second rhyme used the Spice Girls as inspiration.

The Medicine Hat Police Service went with Salt-N-Pepa’s “Push It.”

We’ve been receiving lots of messages from people wanting us to join in on the rap battle started by the Kindersley RCMP, so here it goes:

Traffic Sgt here & I’m gonna get real

Now wait a minute, y’all
Winter drivin’ ain’t for everybody
Only the qualified
So all you fly drivers
If you’re out there, please take it slow
Slow I said!

Traffic Sgt Fishley’s here, and winter driving’s in effect
So we want you to slow it down, babe
Coolin’ by night, then warming by day, working up some icy roads
Come on MedHat, let’s go slow, show the guys that we know
How to drive in the snow
Now slow it down
Ah, slow it
Slow it down
Ah, slow it
Slow down real good
Ah, slow it
Slow down real good
Ah, slow it
S-slow it real good
Slow it down
Ooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Ooh, baby, baby
Baby, baby
Push it good
Push it real good
Ah, push it
Ah, push it
Yo, yo, yo, yo, Medicine Hat
Yeah, accidents happen, that we know
But we can prevent if we all just take it slow
Plan ahead, Don’t go fast or else I’m gonna get mad
Can’t you understand it’s for your safety? I wish you would!
Now slow it down
Slow it down
Slow down real good
Slow it down
S-Slow it down real good
Ah, slow it
Get up on that wheel
Get up on that wheel
Get up on that
Get up on that wheel
Boy, these collisions really got me going
They got me so busy
I don’t know what I’m doing!
Ah, slow it
Ah,slow it
Boy, these collisions really got me going
They got me so
I don’t know what I’m doing!
Ah, slow it
Ah,slow it
