The racially-motivated attack against a now 81-year-old Texas man happened two years ago, but the emotional and physical damage is still evident.
Conrad Alvin Barrett, 29, pleaded guilty to attacking Roy Coleman, who was 79 at the time, because of his skin colour.
According to KPRC News, Barrett was playing the so-called “knockout game.” One news outlet describes the game as one “played by teenaged or young-adult males, who challenge each other to swarm unsuspecting people and punch them in the head with the sole purpose of knocking them out.”
Barrett, in this case, dared himself to attack a person of colour, and even questions if his “knockout” would be seen on TV.
The video of the attack has only been released recently.
“The plan is to see if I were to hit a black person, would this be nationally televised?,” Barrett is heard in his cellphone recording.
He then approaches Coleman on the sidewalk.
“How you doing?” Barrett askes Coleman before punching him in the face, leaving Coleman on the ground as Barrett shouts “knockout” and runs away laughing to his car.
Donna McNeal, Coleman’s daughter, said her father suffered two jaw fractures and was hospitalized for several days following the attack.
“It affected his speech really bad,” McNeal told KPRC.
She also said the incident against her father brought back memories from his childhood of when he endured racism.
“He’s 81. So you know it goes way back. Emotionally, I think he’s… broken.”
Barrett pleaded guilty to a hate crime and is currently serving a six-year prison sentence.
