MONTREAL – It was a clear morning with clear roads at the Angrignon overpass Friday.
After a month of construction, the vital link between LaSalle and Montreal West opened three days ahead of schedule.
“We were prepared for this hinderance because this is in a very strategic area,” said Sarah Bensadoun with Transports Quebec.
Residents of Montreal West said the closure was causing a traffic nightmare in their neighbourhood.
Montreal West Mayor Beny Masella said he can already see a difference on Day One.
“The traffic already seems better coming down Westminster, so we’ll see if that translates late into the week as well,” he said.
Masella said the traffic was dangerous at the corner of Avon Road and Westminster Avenue, even leading to the death of one pedestrian.
But, as one entrance opens a few more are set to close.
These include:
- Highway 20 entrance and exit from Sainte-Anne-de-Bellevue Boulevard
- Entrance from Saint-Pierre Avenue to Highway 20 East
- Montreal-Toronto boulevard between Saint-Jacques Street and Saint-Pierre Avenue
“We are going to move the rail track north near the Saint-Jacques cliff. So, in order to do that, we have to completely redesign the area,” said Bensadoun.
“That’s why we’re dismantling the Montreal West interchange.”
Work begins in December and goes until November 2019.
