MONTREAL – Mayor Denis Coderre went into the belly of the beast after announcing on Twitter that he would be going inside the south-east sewage interceptor to “personally see how the work is going.”
He descended into the 30 km sewage pipe at 12:30 p.m. Thursday.
Wednesday at 12:01 a.m., the City of Montreal started dumping eight billion litres of untreated sewage into the Saint Lawrence River.

Coderre came out swinging several times over the controversial plan, insisting the dump is necessary so the city can temporarily close a large sewer that feeds sewage to a treatment facility.
He said alternative solutions would be too costly.

The discharge will take up to a week.
