‘Needs to be given same respect’: Veteran glad Afghan mission being recognized

MONCTON – A soldier who toured in Afghanistan says it’s good to see that the conflict has gained more attention at Remembrance Day ceremonies.

Major Michael Cox served in Afghanistan from 2008 to 2009. On Wednesday, he attended Moncton’s Remembrance Day ceremony at the Moncton Coliseum.

Thousands of residents attended the event to show their respect.

The conflict in Afghanistan was mentioned during the ceremony along with other wars and missions.

One hundred and fifty-eight men and women died during Canada’s time there and Major Cox says their sacrifice shouldn’t be forgotten.

“It’s now a part of the history of the Canadian Forces so it needs to be given the same kind of mention or respect as some of the conflicts we’ve had soldiers in,” Major Cox said.

“There is a large crowd of soldiers that have served in this theatre and more able to talk about it.”

Paul Belliveau was the event’s master of ceremonies and says so many have fought for Canada or on behalf of Canada in the past and they continue to deserve our respect.

“We can’t just let that drop by the side we have to remember them,” he said. “It’s the only way we’ve got a chance for the future is to remember the past.”
