WINNIPEG – Jon Neil is one of thousands of family members affected by their parent’s war experiences.
His father Bill fought in WWII, leaving for England in 1942 before heading to France.
“He was part of an armoured car which was struck by a German 88 shell at the time and he lost his arm… that was the end of the war for him,” Neil said.
“He was thankful that he survived because in the end he felt that would give him a second opportunity at life.”
Neil said his family’s life was tough and at times seeing their father as a war amputee.
“We have a tremendous amount of pride, we see more than most children would… it’s always visual to us because of course our father lost his arm,” Neil said.
His family will be attending the Remembrance Day ceremony at Winnipeg’s Convention Centre Wednesday.
