Cineplex posts record sales as moviegoers spend up on popcorn, tickets

TORONTO – Cineplex Inc. says attendance at its theatres during the third quarter was up 7.6 per cent from last year and the company set a record for total revenue at $328.2 million.

The revenue was up 9.8 per cent compared with last year’s third quarter and included $172.6 million from the box office, a Cineplex record, and $105.5 million from food services — a 14.5 per cent increase.

Concession revenue per patron was up 5.9 per cent to $5.38 from $5.08, while box office revenue per patron declined 0.8 per cent to $9.09 from $9.16.

The Toronto-based company’s net income was up 34.7 per cent, rising to $21.4 million or 34 cents per share from $15.9 million or 25 cents per share.

Attendance at Cineplex theatres hit 19.4 million, up 1.4 million from last year’s the third quarter.
