WINNIPEG – She’s usually destroying those around her on the pitch. But this weekend, Winnipegger Desiree Scott was instead developing soccer players.

The 2012 Olympic bronze medalist kicked off her second annual, two-day soccer camp at the University of Winnipeg on Saturday morning. Hundreds of girls between the ages of 9 and 18 got a chance to learn a few skills from the “Destroyer” herself. The event has exploded in size thanks to the growth of girls soccer.

“I think hosting the Women’s World Cup was massive for girls all over the country,” said Scott. “They were able to see their idols live right in their backyard. Us being able to give back to them is awesome.”

The event helps raise money for KidSport Winnipeg which Scott received funding from as a child. Roughly a third of the camp’s participants were provided spots by the charity.

“Being able to work with KidSport and give back is so important,” said Scott. “I don’t think any kid should have a barrier or any financial issues keeping them from playing a sport they love. This is something that they can come out, hang with me and learn some skills.”

Scott recently finished her second season with Notts County LFC of England’s FA Women’s Super League.
