CALGARY – The Calgary Humane Society announced on Thursday that the shelter is over capacity following two recent mass seizures.
The first seizure brought in 35 cats, while the second brought in 27 birds.
Officials aren’t offering any details on the seizures as charges are pending, but say they were abnormal.
“What is unusual about these two recent hoarding situations is the social quality of the animals removed,” said Calgary Humane Society spokesperson Brad Nichols in a news release. “Typically, a hoard consists of feral and inbred animals with a high degree of medical intervention required. These groups appear to be well adjusted and we expect they will make good house pets once treatable medical issues are resolved.”
To help create space at the shelter, officials are offering reduced adoption fees this month for select birds and all cats seven-months and older.
“If a potential adopter ever wanted to offer a new loving home to an animal at the core of an animal cruelty investigation, now is a great time to come in.”
Calgary Humane Society said this year is expected to be a record breaking year for seizures.
