Customer says matchmaker Lifemates failed to find her a match after paying $4,600

TORONTO — At age 40, she had waded through free, online dating sites in the hope of finding the right match: someone with common interests, a wish to be married and a desire to have children.

But the woman, who Global News agreed not to identify, eventually thought a paid matchmaking service was a better idea.

So she agreed to pay $4,600 to Lifemates, a Mississauga, Ont.-based matchmaking service she contacted after seeing advertising for the company.

She says the company committed to provide 10 “matches” for the fee. But the customer says Lifemates only got in touch with her on four occasions with matches and only after she contacted them to complain.

The woman also says she asked the company for a refund but was refused.

Contacted by Global News, spokesman Shaun Waterman declined comment because of timing.

“We would be happy to help, but we would need some time,” said Waterman, offering to follow up later.

“I am not in the office today and I would want to get some background on the member, her matches and feedback.”

Other customers have lodged similar complaints about Lifemates, arguing the company applied sales pressure and made promises about matches, but didn’t follow through.
