LETHBRIDGE – Police say a despondent 32-year-old woman barricaded inside her home caused evacuations and road closures on Halloween night.

On Oct. 31, police received a call just after 6:30 p.m. of a woman in possession of firearms and threatening self-harm. In the interest of public safety, Lethbridge police evacuated neighbourhood homes and closed roads around the 100 block of Heritage Court West.

After nearly four hours of negotiations, the woman exited her home and was taken into custody under the Mental Health Act. She was transferred to Chinook Regional Hospital, where she remained in custody Monday.

In the home police found a loaded rifle and pistol, several other firearms and ammunition.

Two charges of careless use/storage of a firearm and one count of possession of a dangerous weapon are pending.

Lethbridge police received help from numerous departments, including the explosive disposal unit, which used a robot to make contact with the woman.
