MEMBERTOU – Membertou First Nation received its first Financial Management System certificate from the First Nations Financial Management Board (FMB) on Monday at a ceremony in Membertou.

Membertou has worked hard to become a more economically independent and prosporous community.

“Over the years, this community has successfully implemented stronger fiscal management measures.  It is with great pleasure to see that they have achieved and certainly earned the FMS certification,” said FMB Executive Chair Harold Calla.

It is hoped that Membertou will set an example for other first nations to follow. Having FMS certifications comes with increased transparency and accountability to the community members as well as the ability to expand economic development opportunities. The certification gives them better capability to access funding to make community improvements.

“We will continue to improve upon our current system and expand our economic development and community infrastructure initiatives,” said Membertou Chief Terrance Paul.
