LETHBRIDGE – A southern Alberta couple tied the knot at their favourite place to grab a cup of coffee in a ceremony filled with Canadiana.
Greg Arlett and Adonus Wiseman were wed at a Tim Hortons location in Lethbridge in front of family and friends, wearing the hockey jerseys of their favourite teams, the Edmonton Oilers (Greg) and the Montreal Canadiens (Adonus).
The two are die-hard hockey fans of rival teams, but despite the difference in support they still make it work.
“One of us knows the right team, one of us doesn’t,” laughs Arlett.
“We talk about hockey together but we don’t bash each other’s teams,” said Wiseman. “We love each other but we’re allowed to have the difference.”
The couple met through mutual friends a year ago and have since “been joined at the hip at all times”, eventually deciding to get married. However, when plans for a destination wedding in Mexico fell through, they were left scrambling to find a venue.
“I can’t remember who brought up Tim Hortons, but it was a perfect fit,” said family friend, Juanita DeVos. “They never go anywhere without a Tim Hortons cup.”
Appromixately 50 guests attended the wedding, filling the restaurant and sporting their own hockey jerseys. Adonus and Greg exchanged vows in front of an officiant dressed as a referee, with a live performance of the ‘The Hockey Song’ by Stompin’ Tom Connors playing in the background. Along with exchanging vows, the two also exchanged jerseys; Adonus revealing a custom Edmonton Oilers dress underneath her Canadiens jersey, Greg donning the Habs jersey himself.
“I feel more at peace now, like this is exactly where we’re supposed to be,” said Wiseman.
