REGINA – There are concerns in Manitoba and Saskatchewan about a supply of propane gas from a bulk supplier in Saskatchewan that does not contain a safety additive.
The fire commissioner’s office in Manitoba says the gas doesn’t have a chemical agent that gives off a distinctive smell that alerts users of tank leakage.

“Customers’ safety is absolutely our priority in this situation,” said Cal Fichter, Vice-President Energy, FCL.
“Now that we’re aware of this situation, we’re working with our supplier, safety regulators and local Co-ops across Western Canada to ensure that we take the right steps to keep our customers safe.”
The office says the biggest risk is with new or first-time-filled propane tanks that don’t have any residual odour from past fills.
In Saskatchewan, Federated Co-operatives Limited says in a statement that it’s working on the situation with its propane supplier, regulatory authorities and local Co-op stores.
