HALIFAX – The Nova Scotia government says the association representing medical residents has requested arbitration after declaring an impasse in negotiations.

In a news release Premier Stephen McNeil says he’s disappointed by a move the government says came two weeks ahead of a discussion of its wage proposal at the bargaining table.

McNeil says the government wants to provide wage increases to workers, but wants unions and associations to collaborate with employers to help find savings to fund the increases and improve public services.

McNeil says he doesn’t believe the association engaged in “meaningful collective bargaining.”

The province’s medical residents are represented by Maritime Resident Doctors.
