Regina Public Library looks ahead to expansion

The Regina Public Library board is expected to vote on the demolition and construction of the library at its public meeting on Sept. 27. According to Havelock, the RPL considered seven options for the central library, but none of them were presented to the public and decisions were made behind closed doors. File / Global News

The Regina Public Library (RPL) is seeking a two per cent mill rate increase from the city to help cover expanding their digital services, administration costs, and the expansion of the George Bothwell Branch.

A new lease at the mall was secured by the RPL earlier this year to bring on the proposed $2.9 million expansion. The expansion would see the branch add 3,300 square feet on top of the existing 17,000 sq ft. space. A “store front” entrance will also be added to the main corridor in the mall.

“It’s going to be a little more user friendly and open,” said RPL board member Darryl Lucke. “It’s an open concept with folding glass doors in program rooms that will make the library itself seem bigger.”

The RPL board feels the expansion will help serve the location’s growing clientele due to the increased population in nearby neighbourhoods like Harbour Landing.

Expansion at the Central Branch continues to be delayed, but the board said they hope to have a final recommendation ready to present to the city within the next 12 months.

As for the annual mill rate request the two per cent increase breaks down to $3.46 per household.
