ACWORTH, Ga. — A 2-year-old boy has died after police say he accidentally shot himself with a gun his father left on a bed in Georgia.

Local news outlets report the shooting happened Tuesday night at a home in a subdivision near Interstate 75. Acworth police spokeswoman Youlanda Leverette says the child’s father and 4-year-old brother were also at the home when police received the emergency call around 7:30 p.m.

Leverette says the gun was left on the bed. Leverette says it is not known if the child was playing with the gun, but he somehow was able to grab the handgun and shoot himself. Authorities say the child’s mother was not home when the shooting happened.

Leverette says no charges have been filed, though the investigation is ongoing.
