Lawsuit filed in Regina Beach natural gas explosion

REGINA – Close to a year ago the Town of Regina Beach was rocked by a major natural gas explosion, and now a lawsuit has been filed not by the property owner, but against them.

In December 2014, the Oldershaw’s summer home was reduced to rubble and several other homes were seriously damaged in the blast.

Now as the property owners prepare to celebrate the completion of their rebuilt home, a lawsuit accuses them of negligence, and they’re not the only ones.

A group of property owners have filed a lawsuit against the registered owners of the explosion site, SaskEnergy, and the municipality.

According to court documents, they’re suing for an unspecified amount to pay for repairs, damages and interest.

The suit alleges “it was reasonably foreseeable to SaskEnergy that the gas line could rupture as it was situated in an area subject to soil movement and instability.”

The town is accused of failing to investigate the soil issues prior to approving any development on the property.

Finally, the property owners are accused of negligence for not having an adequate natural gas detector.

The majority of plaintiffs told Global News they weren’t aware of the lawsuit until it was made public by the media Tuesday.

Their insurance company, The Cooperators, said the lawsuit hasn’t been served to the defendants yet, but was filed on October 19th to ensure it met the statute of limitations.
