Missing hiker near Pemberton found dead at bottom of a crevasse

A search for a Vancouver man who went missing near Pemberton has ended in tragedy.

Forty-nine-year-old Michael Low was last seen Friday. He told friends he was going to the Keith Flavelle Hut located near the headwaters of Cerise Creek. He planned to stay overnight and meet friends for dinner on Saturday, but never arrived. Friends were unable to contact him by cellphone.

On Saturday afternoon, after hours of searching, Low’s body was found at the bottom of a crevasse.

Steers offers these words of advice for people thinking of heading into the backcountry as the days get shorter and Daylight Saving Time comes to an end.

“What we find at this time of year is that people overestimate how much daylight they have and they often get overtaken by darkness,” he said.

“That will be especially true next weekend when we do the time change. People really need to be aware that they just don’t have the time to get back from their trip that they did earlier in the season.”
