Edmonton man charged with impaired driving following fatal crash in north end

EDMONTON — A 25-year-old Edmonton man is facing a list of charges, including impaired driving causing death, after a collision claimed the life of one of his passengers earlier this month.

A BMW was heading east on Highway 28A toward Manning Drive on Oct. 10 when it failed to stop at a stop sign. Police said the vehicle went through the intersection and rolled into a nearby field.

The passengers of the car, a 25-year-old man and a 19-year-old woman, were taken to hospital. The man died of his injuries two days later.

The driver, Clarence Hekungua, suffered serious, but non-life-threatening injuries.

Hekungua has since been charged with the following:

  • Impaired driving causing death;
  • Impaired driving causing bodily harm;
  • Dangerous driving causing death;
  • Dangerous driving causing bodily harm;
  • Having blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg % causing death;
  • Having blood alcohol concentration exceeding 80 mg % causing bodily harm.

The victim’s name has not been released. The man’s death is Edmonton’s 30th traffic fatality of 2015.
