Meals on Wheels brings food to homebound seniors

TORONTO — Meals on Wheels is a home support service that delivers meals to the homes of seniors who need special assistance.

Rob Doyle is just one of the many volunteers who deliver affordable, nourishing meals directly to the clients doors.

“It was about 10 years ago that I lost my grandmother,” said Doyle.

“I had been partially raised by my grandmother and I felt that I had lost the connection to that generation.”

So every Monday morning before going into work, Doyle volunteers his time with Meals on Wheels.

“The service is for people who are frail, elderly, for caregivers to help support their family members. It can support a lot of people in different circumstances,” said Eileen McGeean, supervisor of SPRINT Senior Care’s Meals on Wheels program.

“Without the volunteers, this service could not run … Meals on Wheels is one way that communities come together to support people in need and keep people healthy and integrated in their community.”

Ninety-one year old Elizabeth Elliott is a second generation Meals on Wheels user.

“She is so considerate, she is very interested in you as much as you are in her,” said Doyle.

“She’s the kind of individual that I was hoping to meet when I started doing this, and the connection that I thought I had lost.”
