Detention is over for the University of Saskatchewan’s medical school. The College of Medicine was told Friday that its prohibition has been lifted.
The school was placed on probation in 2013 after accreditors identified 13 key problems including faculty accountability and student performance on standardized testing.
Accreditors said 10 of the 13 issues have been partially or fully resolved.

It was welcome news for the dean of the college, Dr. Preston Smith, who explained steps the college has taken since being placed on probation.
“Hiring people into positions for quality improvement, hiring additional faculty members to take on leadership roles in individual courses, engaging more doctors in actually being available to teach at the college of medicine and working with our other faculty and our basic sciences to actually renew our curriculum,” said Smith.
Despite the good news, Smith said there is still work to be done.
“We know we are on the right path and we need to keep pushing forward to realize the full vision for the college,” said Smith.
“Our role is to contribute to the province by training the next generation of physicians to enhance and, through research, to innovate clinical care for the people of Saskatchewan.”
The program will be reevaluated in 2017.
