MONTREAL – It won’t be necessary to run to the ATM before taking a taxi any more.

As of Thursday, all Montreal taxis are obliged to accept electronic payments from their clients.
The City of Montreal announced the changes in early August, and companies were given until Oct. 15 to provide machines to all their drivers.

“This is very good news for the taxi business,” Dani Atallah, Vice-President of the Regroupement de Proprietaires de Taxis de Montreal, had told Global News.
“This puts us one step ahead of Uber and helps us with our fight against them.”

Montreal Mayor Denis Coderre said his main priority is integrated technology, increased security and better customer service.

The mayor also announced all taxis must have a unified image or mark in time for Montreal’s 375th anniversary.
