Mechanic discovers Grade 2 student with special needs left on school bus for nearly 3 hours

A second grade student with special needs in Florida somehow didn’t make it to school Monday and was still on the school bus, hours later, when a mechanic found the child.

Palm Beach County school superintendent Dr. Robert Avossa told WPTV that the bus driver has already been fired while an aide could face disciplinary action.

NBC reported that it has been estimated the unidentified J.C. Mitchell Elementary student was stuck on the bus for nearly three hours — between 10:30 a.m. and 1:30 p.m — before being found by a mechanic.

“We are not going to tolerate this kind of behavior,” Dr. Avossa said. “There is a reason we put two adults on a bus serving children with disabilities.”

“There are programs and protocols in place to make sure those buses are checked before and after students are to be delivered to school. And in this case there was a breakdown.”

Luckily, the child was unharmed and was given water after being found.

Avossa told a news conference that he would “uncover every rock” during an investigation into the matter.

“I am not going to accept people leaving a child on a bus in any condition whether it’s the winter or the summer or any time. That’s their job,” the superintendent added.

The Florida Department of Children and Families and local police have been alerted.
