It wasn’t exactly afternoon delight for the Winnipeg Jets.  The Jets suffered a 4-2 defeat to the New York Islanders on Monday afternoon for their first loss of the young season.

The Islanders built up a three goal lead by the midway point of the second period.  Ryan Strome, Brock Nelson and John Tavares all finding the goal behind Ondrej Pavelec to give the Isles a 3-0 lead.

Mark Scheifele scored his third goal in as many games with over four minutes left in the second period.  Scheifele has scored the Jets first goal in each of their first three outings.

Midway through the final frame Dustin Byfuglien brought the Jets to within one with a powerplay goal.  But Josh Bailey sealed the victory for New York as he scored into the empty net with just 19 seconds remaining.

Pavelec was outstanding again in making his second start of the season.  He stopped 40 of 43 shots and denied Tavares on a penalty shot late in the third period.

The Jets were one for three with the man advantage while the Islanders powerplay connected twice in six chances. Byfuglien led the Jets with four shots and also had a team high 10 hits. Tyler Myers led the Jets in ice time at 23:36.

Winnipeg closes out the season opening 4 game road trip on Tuesday against the New York Rangers.  The Jets then return home for a six game homestand beginning with Friday’s home opener against the Calgary Flames.
