CALGARY – A videotaped police interview with accused killer Nicholas Rasberry was played during the fifth day of his second-degree murder trial Friday.

The interview took place May 5, 2013—the day after Calgary teacher Craig Kelloway was stabbed to death in Rasberry’s home.

In the video, Rasberry tells Calgary Police Det. Trish Allen that Kelloway was threatening to forcibly have sex with him.

He tells the officer there was a knife block beside him.

“I remember the moment of stabbing him and I remember being like, at this point there’s no turning back.”

Rasberry repeatedly tells Allen that Kelloway wanted him to submit, claiming he said: “you’ve gotta let me f–k you.”

But the officer doesn’t buy Rasberry’s story, saying, “this is kind of far-fetched…Like this is a lot far-fetched.”

In the video, Allen describes Kelloway’s injuries to the accused, saying he had multiple stab wounds.

“He’s been eviscerated, his bowels [are] hanging out, he’s got stab wounds on his chest, he’s got stab wounds on his back, he’s got stab wounds on his neck, he’s got a stab wound under his armpit…like very, very aggressive.”

She questions why Rasberry would have used three knives if he was defending himself, and suggests he is not being honest in his version of what happened.

“I think you’re in that corner, you’re talking and…I think you made a move at him…and you go, ‘holy sh– ! What did I just do?’…And now the whole neighbourhood’s gonna know…And he’s gonna beat the sh– outta you, ‘cause you just made a move on him…and you see red.”

The detective goes on to question why he didn’t run, or bang on a neighbour’s door, as opposed to the vicious stabbing.

“I know it doesn’t add up, but I’m telling the truth,” says Rasberry.

Allen replies, “you switch knives three times…that’s huge.”

Rasberry maintains he was defending himself.

“I was put in a horrible situation, and I…made a decision,” he says.

“You made a decision to kill him,” replies Allen.

“No, I made the decision to defend myself.”

The video lasts two hours and 20 minutes. The last few minutes of the tape will be played in court Tuesday as the trial continues.

The video is part of a voir dire, a trial within a trial. The judge will later decide if it will be admitted as evidence into the trial proper.
