WINNIPEG — The Manitoba Moose hockey club has announced forward John Albert has been named captain for the upcoming American Hockey League season.

Albert will wear the “C”, while forward Patrice Cormier and defenseman Andrew MacWilliam have been chosen as alternate captains.

Albert, 26,  wore the “A” last season for the Winnipeg Jets top affiliate in St. John’s. He’s played all of his professional career within the Jets organization after four seasons with the IceCaps. In total, Albert has played 217 career AHL games and scored 56 goals and 63 assists.

“John has all the characteristics you want to have in a leader,” Moose Head Coach Keith McCambridge said in a media release. “He comes to work with a purpose and leads by example every single day. He’s a character individual who makes others around him better.”

Cormier, 25, will be serving as an assistant for the first time in the organization after playing the last four seasons in St. John’s while seeing the occasional game with the Jets.

MacWilliam, 25, was signed as a free agent in the off-season after splitting time between the Toronto Marlies and Toronto Maple Leafs last season. He was also an alternate captain with the Marlies.

“When you add both Patrice and Andrew to that leadership core, you have a group that will demonstrate to our younger players what it takes to be a professional both on and off the ice,” McCambridge said.

Jason Jaffray was the IceCaps captain last season while Albert and defenseman Kris Fredheim were the alternates.

The Moose play their season opener on Friday in Toronto against the Marlies.
