WINNIPEG – The Manitoba men’s curling championship will now be known as the Viterra Championship.
Viterra Inc. has signed a partnership agreement with CurlManitoba to take over the event’s naming rights for the next two years. The national grain company is just the fourth title sponsor in the provincial championship’s 90 year history.
“We’re excited about our new partnership with CurlManitoba which is a great opportunity to support one of the province’s premier sporting events as well as local talent from across its communities,” said Kyle Jeworski, Viterra’s President and CEO for North America. “Most importantly, the values exhibited by our curlers, integrity, respect for others and teamwork, are qualities that are shared by our employees as they work to provide our farm customers with superior service.”
The change comes after Safeway announced it was stepping down as lead sponsor following 21 years. The bonspiel was first dubbed the Safeway Select in 1995 before morphing into the Safeway Championship in 2007. The provincial championship was originally called the British Consols when it first started in 1925. It later became the Labatt Tankard in 1980 before Safeway signed on.
This year’s Viterra Championship will be held in Selkirk from February 9-14, 2016.
