Yard-full of pink pumpkins “reignited the fight” for cancer fighter

SAINT JOHN – A woman battling breast cancer got an unexpected and colourful show of support this past weekend after her entire yard was covered with pink pumpkins

“The pumpkins are so awesome, they are all different colours and they’re got little messages of support” Deanna King said Wednesday.

King was diagnosed with breast cancer in March.

She had already undergone a double mastectomy, exhausting rounds of chemotherapy and thought her battle was almost over, but last Monday was told the terrible news, her cancer was back.

“I was devastated of course my first thoughts go to my little girl and wanting to be healthy for her,” Deanna said.

So in order to cheer her up “my friends decided to gather my coworkers and the fire fighters and they delivered pink pumpkins last weekend and it’s just been incredible.”

“I was in tears,” said Deanna’s husband Mike, also a firefighter.

He says he was overwhelmed by the support from his comrades, who arrived by fire truck to deliver the pink packages.

“With their support everything is making Deanna feel happy and putting a smile on her face as well as the rest of the family,” Mike said.

Deanna’s daughter, 6-year-old Ashlynn, says she could not wait to go to school today because she had a lot talk about at show and tell.

“My grandma took a picture of all the firefighters and me and my mom and dad and the dog and they photocopied the picture off,” she said excitedly.

“There are strangers delivering pumpkins, it’s been really incredible,” Deanna said.

Local resident Brian Henderson hand delivered his pink pumpkin right to Deanna’s door.

“I saw that (and) had to join in, I couldn’t not,” said Henderson.

The gesture is also also fitting as this is breast cancer awareness month.

“It’s amazing having support from people we don’t even know, showing awareness for Deanna and also everyone who suffers from this disease,” said Mike
