WATCH: Canadian Cancer Society cancels free patient rides

A popular volunteer-driven  program that helps cancer patients get to their appointments has been scrapped by the B.C. chapter of the Canadian Cancer Society.

Larry Coleman is one of 380 volunteers let go by the Canadian Cancer Society, which has cancelled its volunteer driver program in B.C.

He says his clients are devastated.

For the past 25 years, drivers have taken patients to life- saving treatments, getting 41 cents per kilometer as compensation.

“Some [people] don’t know what they are going to do,” says Coleman.

The Canadian Cancer Society says it’s cutting the program to save about $400,000 a year.

Sandra Krueckl with the society, said they have seen a declining usage of the program in recent years.

“Added to that the non-for-profit sector is facing challenges in volunteerism, so fewer people volunteering and this program needs a lot of volunteers.”
