Shaw enters viral video wars with successful Thanksgiving campaign

Bringing families together is the theme of the latest viral video campaign launched by Calgary-based Shaw Communications.

The four-minute video features three Shaw customers flown home to be with their families for the holidays.

The twist comes in the form of a video chat, which recreates the individual living rooms in the back of a cable van parked right outside the home.

The campaign took months to put together, says Shaw’s vice president of external affairs, Chethan Lakshman.

“We wanted to do something special for some of our customers in the Calgary area by bringing them together with members of their families who they regularly connect with by using our network to bridge the great distance between them,” said Lakshman.

The video includes a number of emotional moments, including a grandfather being reunited with his daughter and meeting grandchildren who he had never seen in person.

The production is reminiscent of similar campaigns launched by another Calgary-based company. WestJet has dominated the market on viral video hits around the holidays.

Experts say that while pricing and services are usually deciding factors for consumers, videos like these can be very effective at building a strong emotional connection between customers and companies.

Shaw Communications is the parent company of Global News.
