Army to get new headquarters in West at CFB Edmonton

EDMONTON – Federal Defence Minister Peter MacKay has announced construction of new headquarters in Edmonton for Land Force Western Area.

The 8,000-square-metre building will be the hub for Western Canada, one of the army’s four regional command centres.

It will replace a 60-year-old former schoolhouse that is now the headquarters building at the old Griesbach Barracks. Griesbach is the one-time military base that is 12 kilometres away from the actual CFB Edmonton.

MacKay says the new building will cost $54 million. It is expected to open in November 2013.
