Blooming good award for West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation

WEST KELOWNA – It’s a feather in the shared hat of the City of West Kelowna and the Westbank First Nation.

The pair has been awarded top prize in the Partners in Bloom category, population 20,000 to 50,000, for the national Communities in Bloom competition.

Entrants are judged on tidiness, environmental action, heritage conservation, urban forestry, landscape and floral displays.

“WFN is proud to be the only First Nation we know to have participated and achieved national recognition in the Communities in Bloom program,” says Chief Robert Louie in a news release.

This is the 11th year the two communities have partnered in the competition.

“We are united communities in so many ways and this recognition highlights for us our partnership in ensuring our communities are protected, enhanced and celebrated,” says West Kelowna Mayor Doug Findlater.

In their evaluation, two judges noted: “The City of West Kelowna and Westbank First Nation are two distinct communities that share a single vision to create a community that shares the vision of communication, respect and acceptance. This is demonstrated in so many ways as one travels throughout the two communities.”

The judges also cited waterfront improvements along Boucherie Road for a Special Mention.

Communities in Bloom is a non-profit agency that promotes green spaces in communities across the country.
