Sussex man charged with not reporting death of elderly woman

SUSSEX, NB – A Sussex man has been sent for a 30-day psychological assessment after being charged by police with failing to report a death of a woman.

Edward James Firth, 51, was in Saint John Provincial Court on Thursday.

Police say the woman is a family member of Firth’s, but did not reveal how she is related. They both lived in the home where the body was discovered.

RCMP officers were asked to do a well-being check on an 81-year-old woman at her residence.

Police were told the woman hadn’t been seen for several weeks.

They discovered her body Tuesday when they arrived at the home. They arrested the man after discovering the body.

Police say they believe the woman died in the residence sometime between Aug. 13 and Sept. 30.

An autopsy was conducted, but the exact cause of death has not been determined. Police are continuing their investigation into the cause of the woman’s death.

Firth is due back in court November 3.
