Could Twitter really be expanding its 140-character limit?

Tired of using (1/2) or (Cont…) to share long-winded tweets? You may be in luck. According to reports, the social network is working on a new product that would allow users to tweet using more than 140 characters.

Citing people familiar with the matter, Re/Code reported Tuesday that Twitter was building a product that would allow users to publish long-form content to the site.

The report also claimed Twitter has discussed ways to lengthen its famous 140-character limit, by removing things like links or handles from the count.

While the reports are not confirmed – and Twitter has declined to comment – the social network has recently made a number of changes to the site giving users room to share more.

In August, Twitter removed the 140-character limit from its Direct Messages feature. And in April, the social network added the option for users to add a comment to their retweets.

Services that allow users to share longer messages on Twitter – such as OneShot or TwitLonger – already exist; however, both services link to an outside page and display the text as an image.

A second report by The Wall Street Journal added that the company is considering upping the character limit to 150 characters or more.

Removing the 140-character limit would be a drastic change for the site – one that many users seem to be against. Many took to Twitter Tuesday to protest the idea of a longer character limit.

On the other hand, those who may be in favour of a bigger character limit took the opportunity to make some clever jokes about the rumoured changes.

Twitter has had challenges in broadening the appeal of its service to the mass market amid fierce competition from Facebook as well as messaging apps like WhatsApp or Snapchat.
