MONCTON – Moncton’s public transit system has had a moderate increase in ridership since this time last year.
Senior Transit Planner Marie-Claire Pierce told Global News that from January to August the service has seen a 3.5 per cent increase in daily rides.
That works out to about 200 extra people per day.
Pierce said this is good news for the service, which was pushing for a two per cent increase in riders this year.
“It was interesting because over the summer months when the ride was for free for high school students … we increased by 5.1 per cent,” she said.
“If you ask and talk to our operators, they saw quite an increase in students,” she said.
Codiac Transpo allocated extra money in their budget this year for marketing.
“So all these promotions that you see, we’re on social media now, we have Facebook. Those types of things, all offer us good connection to our customers and potential customers,” she said.
“Our hope in doing these kinds of promotions is to gain ridership after, gain customers after the promotion is done.”
Codiac Transpo will be launching another promotion in October offering a 10-ride punch card for half price.
