Potentially explosive chemical safely destroyed in Saskatoon

SASKATOON – The Saskatoon Fire Department says an unstable chemical found at ALS Laboratory Group was safely destroyed Friday. It all started with a report of a potentially explosive chemical being discovered at a business at 819 58th St. W. at around 12:30 p.m. CT.

Emergency services, members of the police’s explosives disposal unit and the Hazmat unit were called to the laboratory in the North Industrial neighbourhood.

The chemical disposal company had responded to pick up two containers of expired Ethyl-ether. One of the containers had become deformed and dangerous.

Police said, in this case, it’s believed the chemical was potentially explosive.

The business was evacuated as a precaution and a perimeter was set up by police.

The fire department says a plan was made to safely dispose of the chemical and emergency services transported them to an area by 60 Street and Faithfull Avenue. A lockdown and evacuation of all businesses along the route was completed.

The chemical was destroyed in a vacant field.

No injuries were reported.
