Tunnel boring begins westward on Eglinton Crosstown LRT

TORONTO – The next phase of the Eglinton Crosstown LRT project is being set in motion as westward tunnel boring will begin at the end of the month, the province announced Thursday.

The 400 tonne machines, nicknamed Don and Humber, will start boring operations on Sept. 29 from the launch shaft located east of Brentcliffe Road and then travel to Yonge Street.

Work on the western segment of the tunnel has been underway since June 2013 with four of the 6.5 kilometres already complete, the province says.

All tunneling work is expected to be complete by the end of 2016.

The Metrolinx project includes a 19-kilometre transit corridor, including a 10-kilometre underground portion, with service set to begin in 2021.

The $5.3 billion Crosstown will consist of 25 stations and stops, linking to bus routes, three subway stations and GO Transit lines.
