HALIFAX – The suspicious package located at Rainbow Gate at CFB Halifax on Wednesday morning was determined to be just garbage.
Petty Officer First Class Danny Bouchard from the Fleet Diving Unit Atlantic said they were alerted to the package at about 7:30 a.m. on Wednesday and arrived on scene at 9:30 a.m.. Military police were on scene to set up the coordinates and remained on scene until Fleet Diving Unit arrived.
Mike Bonin with the military police later told Global News that the package was just garbage left by the garbage bin, but maintained that military personnel did the right thing in dealing with the situation the way they did.
A robot was sent into the shelter to inspect the package, which then blew up the package and the military police then took over to determine if there were any other suspicious items inside.
The entire area was closed off and some buildings were evacuated to secure the area and the package, and ensure public safety.
Rainbow Gate is one of the main gates to the Naval dockyard in Halifax.
