UPDATE: North Shore Rescue locates missing hikers

North Shore Rescue has located two overdue hikers on Mount Seymour and hopes to airlift them out in the next hour.

The couple left for a five-hour hike to Third Pump at 9:30 a.m. on Tuesday from Richmond, but never returned home.

They did manage to make a call at 7 p.m. to a friend, but lost their cell phone signal before their location could be determined.

Crews suspended the overnight search, but resumed their efforts at first light today.

This morning, they finally made contact with the couple over the phone and tried to pinpoint a more precise location.

Mike Danks with North Shore Rescue says the hikers are not very experienced, are not very familiar with Mount Seymour and were not prepared for overnight conditions.

Global News has a crew in the area and will be providing updates throughout this morning.
