WINNIPEG – We’ve all heard of Paleo, Atkins and South Beach.
But how about the DNA diet?
It’s what Winnipeg Jets forward Mark Scheifele used this off-season to bulk up.
“It was a good summer for that,” said Scheifele. “I’m happy I was able to put on a bunch of muscle and increase that weight.”
The Jets top pick in the 2011 NHL entry draft heads into this season 11 pounds heavier than last year and more than 30 pounds larger than his rookie season. To help Scheifele pack on the pounds, his trainer, former NHL’er Gary Roberts, used DNA testing to see what type of food digests well in Scheifele’s system and what kind of diet he should be on.

“It’s not like I was hammering McDonald’s every day,” said Scheifele. “Obviously eating the right food and doing the right things to make sure I’m maintaining my speed while putting on strength as well.”
Scheifele has trained with Roberts in previous off-seasons. The 22-year-old worked out five times a week this summer to hit his goal.
“It’s just the little things,” said Scheifele. “There’s not a huge difference between a guy playing in the AHL to a guy in the NHL. It’s the littlest thing. You want to stay ahead of it.”
Scheifele is entering his third full NHL season after scoring a career-high 15 goals and 34 assists in 2014-2015.
