FREDERICTON – Fredericton Police along with RCMP and three car seat technicians conducted a road block this week, finding many car seats had not been properly installed.
Of the 17 cars stopped with car seats, 15 required changes to their installs and three of them needed the seat re-installed completely.
They found some loose installs, booster seats not strapped in and improper recline of the rear-facing car seat.
Car seat technician Melissa Cyr says education on child passenger safety is a work in progress. Cyr works with the Fredericton Regional Family Resource Centre.

Last year, the centre helped to properly install 145 car seats.
“Extremely dangerous. That is one of the most common cause of death for an infant is an improper car seat install,” she said.
If the seat is involved in one accident, it can’t be used again. They expire if the seat is between six and eight years old.
Cyr says the longer you use a rear-facing seat, the better.
It’s important information many don’t know, which is why the Centre is encouraging more parents to give them a call and make an appointment.
The Centre installs car seats for free.
According to Transport Canada, about 7,000 children are hurt or killed each year on the road.
