Kit Hillis hopes younger brother Mitch can lead Huskies to Hardy Cup

SASKATOON – Kit Hillis is the Saskatchewan Huskies all-time receptions leader, a two-time Canada West All-Star, and a CIS first team All-Canadian. But there is one glaring omission on his impressive football resume. Kit never played in the Hardy Cup.

Now Kit hopes that his younger brother, Mitch, can lead Saskatchewan to a conference championship.

Kit played his final CIS football game on Nov.  7, 2014. It was a nightmare. The Huskies blew a 19 point second half lead against the Manitoba Bisons, ending what was a promising year for the dogs.

Despite that crushing loss, football is still a massive part of Kit’s life. He coaches the St. Joseph Guardians high school football team and Kit is, of course, still a loyal Huskies supporter.

“It’s stressful!” said Hillis. “You’re in the stands and you’re just wishing that you could be out there with the guys helping them out.”

Breaking news from Canada and around the world sent to your email, as it happens.

During Kit’s final two seasons with the Huskies, he got to play alongside his younger brother, Mitch. It was an experience both brothers cherish, even if they weren’t always on the same page.

“There were some arguments at times,” chuckled Huskies head coach Brian Towriss. “They are complete opposites.”

“Oh ya, definitely butted heads,” said Mitch. “The issues, I don’t think they were ever bad, just kind of us being competitive.”

Despite the occasional disagreement, both Hillis brothers believe the time they spent together as teammates brought them closer together than ever before. Kit wants the best for Mitch both on and off the field.

It would mean the world for Kit to watch Mitch and the rest of the Saskatchewan Huskies play in the Hardy Cup.

“To see them make a push this year and host the Hardy Cup and beyond, that would be incredible.”

“Even though he’s not on the team anymore, he’s still very invested in us,” said Mitch. “I think it would be unreal to give him the opportunity to watch us play in the Hardy Cup.”

The 0-2 Huskies will have to turn the tide quickly if they are going to play in the conference championship this year.

The Huskies quest for a spot in the Hardy Cup continues Friday night at Griffiths Stadium against the Regina Rams.

Friday’s game will be broadcast on Shaw TV.
