KAMLOOPS, B.C. – Tom Mulcair is promoting himself as a strong economic leader who will grow jobs and eliminate poverty among seniors and children, as he makes his final stop on a tour of British Columbia’s southern Interior.

The NDP leader told a raucous crowd of supporters in Kamloops on Tuesday night that Prime Minister Stephen Harper has the worst job-creation record since the Second World War.

Mulcair says he has a plan to kick-start the economy that includes investments in infrastructure and transit that will create good, local jobs in Kamloops.

He’s vowing to be a champion for manufacturing and innovation in B.C., where the NDP says over 30,000 manufacturing jobs have been lost under Harper.

The party is trying to attract new voters in the largely Conservative Okanagan region, where Mulcair has spent the past two days touting his plans to boost tourism and fight wildfires.

He’s been greeted by packed rooms of fans waving orange signs and snapping selfies, and won two standing ovations Tuesday night when he spoke on seniors’ and children’s poverty.

“What energy,” he exclaimed as he took the stage. “With energy and determination and a turnout like this, it’s going to go very well for us in this region.”

Mulcair has promised to roll back the eligibility age for Old Age Security to 65 from 67 and increase the guaranteed income supplement by $400 million a year.

He also says the NDP will end tax loopholes used by Canadians on their stock options and would use the money to help children living in poverty.

The NDP leader is set to make an announcement at a sports centre in Kamloops this morning before flying to Toronto to get ready for a campaign event on Thursday.
