WATCH: Global turns 40! If these walls could talk
WINNIPEG — On Sept. 1, 1975, Global Winnipeg was born.
The first show to be broadcast from the station was the Jerry Lewis Variety Telethon, which also marked the first time the popular program was aired in Canada.
When the TV station first set up shop, there were no teleprompters or fancy graphics; instead, scripts were written on typewriters and the weather forecast was done on a chalkboard.
As former sports director Joe Pascucci noted on the station’s 20th anniversary: “Another important change … computers, and some of us are even lucky enough to have them in colour.”

Global Winnipeg began as CKND at an old grocery store at the corner of St. Anne’s and St. Mary’s Road. In 2008 it moved to the 30th floor of 201 Portage Ave.
It is now owned by Shaw Media and provides local newscasts in more than a dozen different markets.

The station has helped launch the careers of many Canadian broadcast journalists, including Global National anchor Dawna Friesen, former sports director Joe Pascucci, Sportsnet reporters and anchors Gene Principe and Darren Millard and TSN anchors Derek Taylor and Cory Woron.
On Tuesday, starting on the Morning News, Global will look back at 40 great years, and will give away cash and prizes throughout the month including 40 $100 pre-paid credit cards.
