Woman allegedly attacked with a crowbar in Moncton

WATCH ABOVE: RCMP are investigating after a young woman was attacked with a crowbar while walking to work. Global’s Brion Robinson reports.

MONCTON – Codiac RCMP say tips from the public are crucial in helping them find out who allegedly attacked a woman with a crowbar Wednesday morning.

Cpl. Jacques Cloutier speaks for Codiac RCMP and says police are treating this as a very serious crime.

“We’d appreciate help from the public if somebody out there knows something we’d like for them to give us a call,” he said.

Stephanie Sweeney alleges she was walking to work on Birchmount Drive towards Mountain Road when a man pulled up beside her in a black Pontiac Sunfire shortly before six a.m.

“I stopped and the gentleman got out of the car and he had a crowbar in his hand,” she said. “He yelled at me to give him all my stuff and then proceeded to hit my left side with a crowbar.”

The man took her knapsack with her tablet and a small amount of money inside.

Sweeney then called her friend with her cellphone while she was running to a nearby Tim Hortons for safety. She eventually called the RCMP and paramedics came to look at her injuries.

Sweeney said she couldn’t identify the man because a hoodie partially covered his face.

But a bruise that was several inches long on her left side was so bad, she was taken to the hospital for treatment.

Locals said they were surprised by the attack. But said the area is getting more violent.

“It’s getting so bad now you can hardly walk on the street,” said Eric Fullerton.

RCMP say the car was last seen heading south on Birchmount Drive.

The investigation continues.
